Interview with Zachary Campos Funky MC

Zachary – great to catch up with you, and congrats for the upcoming album! For those who don’t know, how would you describe your current sound?

I would describe my current sound as a mix of 2000’s indie rock, 1970’s punk rock, and 1980’s old-school hip-hop.

Why the album title Funky MC?

The title Funky MC serves as a homage to the old-school rap records I love so much. I love funky hip-hop from artists such as the Beastie Boys, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & The j Furious Five, Eric B. & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Cold Crush Brothers, and Run-D.M.C. I wear my influences on my sleeve, and I decided to choose an album name that honors the artists I study on a daily basis.

“Scorching” seemed like a fitting introduction to the new project – what inspired this approach, this fusion of retro punk and old school rap?

The biggest influence for the musical direction of “Scorching” was the Beastie Boys. For this song, I set out to make a track that I myself would listen to. I would say I succeeded in that goal.

Do you play the guitar on this album, and if so, how long have you been playing, and who are your influences?

The person you hear playing guitar on the record is Tim J Abbott. He also plays bass on all of the tracks. The influences I gave Tim for the guitar sound of this album were the Beastie Boys, the Ramones, and Joy Division.

Was there a conceptual plan with the album, or more of a stylistic and fun intention?

It was a mix of both. The majority of this album was written while I was at a gig for a birthday party. It definitely added to the experience of writing since I felt so creatively inspired. The songs were written in an efficient manner. I wanted to create my dream album in a sense. A mashup of punk rock and old-school rap with a modern day indie twist.

The sound is fairly minimalist - what’s your production set-up, and is this an entirely self-made released?

The process of how this album was made started on my phone. I recorded the demos for Funky MC using my GarageBand app. I then sent them to Josh Zuckermann and Tim J Abbott Of Kingdom Voice Productions in Santa Clara, California. About a week or so later I came into the studio and recorded the entire album in a day. Tim played the guitar, I recorded the drums using a keyboard, and both Josh & Tim handled production. It was a very fun and effective process. I returned 2 days later to finish mixing & mastering the album with Tim And Josh. It was an incredible recording experience.

Most of the songs note significantly short runtimes. What was your creative process like, was this a freestyle approach on the mic, or pre-written, and does the short timespan represent anything in particular?

All songs for this record were pre-written. Most of the lyrics come from freestyles I do at my live performances. For example, “I’m feeling great, I believe in fate, and destiny, you heard it straight from me” is something I would definitely say in a freestyle. Songs such as “Traffic” and “Everything” came from my usual writing style of writing as a poem first and song second. The Short timespan of the songs is an homage to the Ramones and their first album.

We get hints of connection to a more personal story with the likes of ‘Funky’ and ‘Everything’ –how important is authenticity and heartfelt reflection for this project?

I always put my heart into everything I do. The biggest contributing factor to the sincerity in my lyricism is the fact that I’m going to be a dad come this fall. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me and has made me want to be more honest, not only to the people in my life I love so much, but to myself as well.

What’s your plan of action for the rest of the year, post release?

My plan of action is to be at peace with my spirit, to be good to the ones I love, and to be a great father.

Interview with Max P

Love Music: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your background, education, music passion etc. ??

I was born into a musical home. My mother used to sing for fun and my dad played the drums in a local band. My grandfather was the conductor of a marching band who also composed music. As a kid I was always surrounded by musical instruments, first I played around on my dad’s guitar but I never got the hang of it. So I turned to the drumkit and started pounding along with some records on my turntable. Later I learned to play keyboards and I also started recording stuff when I was a teenager. I always felt the need to express myself and I’m glad that I’ve been doing that professionally for the past twelve years.

Love Music: We’ve been hearing a lot about you, so we notice you’re starting to gain a lot of attention.How does it feel?

I am used to a role in the background, working with DJ’s with lots of fans. It’s nice to show up on stage every now and then to sing for their live audiences and get some attention, but then it’s nice to get off the stage and return to my fairly anonymous life. Now with these personal songs coming up I have to be seen. I’m not sure I like all the attention, but today I went to a party and several people came up to me telling me how moved they were by listening to my new single ‘Silence’. I’m excited to hear that my music has this effect on people.

Love Music: Can you please tell our readers more about 'Microphone Therapy'?

‘Silence’ is the first single in a collection of twelve songs that I wrote over the years, inspired by life events. Eventually I want to bundle all twelve songs into an album called ‘Microphone Therapy’, because that’s what it is to me. Writing these songs was a first step to deal with some life changing events. Recording and producing the songs was a confrontation with the dark side of my emotions. Vocalizing my experiences is a process of healing and that’s why I call it Microphone Therapy.

Love Music: Any upcoming songwriting project?

I’m glad that I took the time to write my personal songs for Microphone Therapy, because it also clears the head and makes room for new songs. I hope that helps when I’m writing new material with the producers and DJs that I frequently work with.

Love Music: What has been one of the most exciting achievements of your career so far ?

Professionally I have created music that generates buckets of streams, it brought me to some amazing places, performing on some of the biggest festivals and venues in the world. But personally, at the end of the day, really getting through to one person with a song is the ultimate achievement.

Love Music: What’s your goal in life?

Simply be happy. 

Love Music: What motivates you to do your best work as vocalist?

I don’t consider myself to be a very good singer. I’m jealous of singers with rich and tone steady voices. So I compensate that by putting all my energy into a recording and trying my best to make the listener feel the emotion that the song requires.

Love Music: Did you choose this industry, as a career, or as a hobby?

For years I worked part time as a financial administrator in a wholesale company.Working part time allowed me to make enough money to get by and still have plenty of time to play in a band and work on music in any other way I could. Twelve years ago I quit that job and started earning my bread and butter in the music industry. It was quite a challenge at first, but eventually it turned out to be the right choice.

Love Music: Everybody needs a time out. What do you do in your free time?

I have my studio at home, so when I’m at home I’m working. If want to take some time off from work I really need to get out of the house.I like traveling to places where it’s not cold or rainy. My girlfriend likes that too, so that’s something we both enjoy.

Interview with Multivox

Love Music: How did your musical journey begin, and what inspired you to get involved in the Manchester alternative indie scene in the late '90s?

The Manchester music scene of the late 80s and early 90s really inspired me to start making music myself. I discovered several bands whilst listening to the John Peel radio show on BBC Radio One. Amongst my favourites were The Fall, Dumb, Cranes, PJ Harvey, I Ludicrous and The Wedding Present. I was working at NatWest Bank back then and I soon realised that music was an area I wanted to explore. I saved up my wages for months so I could get myself an electric guitar and small amp. I self taught myself and instantly started writing my own material. I never had any interest in learning covers or playing along with others music. My time working with the bands Thrush Puppies and Monomania served like an apprenticeship and I an definitely writing my strongest material now with help from my wonderful producer and friend Jon Brooks aka TrackSonix.

Love Music: Can you share the creative process behind your solo project, Multivox, and how it differs from your previous experiences with bands like Thrush Puppies and Monomania?

My solo project started in lockdown one. I had always been in bands in the past so having 100% creative solo freedom was something very unfamiliar but incredibly empowering. In my two previous bands we jammed out a lot of ideas in rehearsals so having total control over the direction of the songs has been a totally new experience.

Love Music: Multivox is "quirky and off-kilter." How do you personally interpret these qualities in your music, and how do they influence your songwriting?

I have always naturally written about topics that don't fit into the traditional mainstream. I think growing up listening to the likes of John Cooper Clarke, Frank Zappa and Mark E Smith had a huge influence on me. I was always drawn to leftfield subjects although it was never intentional. Manchester Life magazine described me as off-kilter and quirky and I think it's a huge compliment so be seen as different to the norm. 

Love Music: Collaborating remotely with female vocalists worldwide during lockdown is an intriguing concept. How did this idea come about, and how did it impact the development of Multivox's sound?

Whilst writing my solo material in lockdown I realised that a lot of my vocal parts would suit a higher female register. That's when I considered working with female vocalists remotely and it soon became hugely addictive. Working with lots of different vocalists has been a wonderful experience which I intend to continue. Working with girls from different continents is thrilling and some of the newest vocals are in their native languages too. My latest time called Sexuelle is in French and another song called Stockport, Neu Berlin is in German and I hope to produce several more tracks in many different languages in future.

Love Music: Nataliya Negodaeva, aka Multivox, is described as an "immortal live portal of dual nationality." Could you elaborate on the significance of this description and how it ties into the overall concept of Multivox?

Multivox is my vocal portal and she represents all the girls both live and visually. She gives me complete freedom to access voices and work with vocalists of any nationality. For those of your readers who don't know, vox stands for vocals and multi stands for multiple hence the name Multivox.

Love Music: Being a multilinguist, how does Nataliya Negodaeva's linguistic diversity contribute to the range of voices and emotions conveyed in Multivox's music?

Nataliya aka Multivox allows me to work with any vocalists all over the globe. Thus far I have worked with vocalists in Australia, Argentina,  The Dominican Republic, Ukraine, China, Japan, Germany, France and many others. Multivox truly is a multilingual portal of dual nationality.

Love Music: Can you share any memorable experiences or challenges you encountered while working remotely with artists from different parts of the world during the creation of Multivox?

Sometimes it can be hard to express how I want the vocals to be delivered. It can often require multiple takes, and other times it's plain sailing. I have been lucky to find such talented girls with amazing musicality, energy, professionalism and creative intelligence. The language barrier has only been an issue on one occasion where the desired result was simply unachievable but it was a tough vocal rhythmically so it wasn't entirely surprising.

Love Music: How do you balance incorporating different voices, including your own, to create a cohesive and harmonious sound in Multivox's music?

It's been pretty easy so far. In fact finding space for my own vocals has been the biggest issue. I enjoy the female vocals so much that I often forget that I am also a vocalist myself. My latest track features my vocals and it's nice to hear my vocals alongside Nataliya. 

Love Music: What do you hope listeners take away from the unique combination of your solo work and the collaborative efforts with Nataliya Negodaeva in Multivox?

I hope they will find it a joyful experience hearing such a diverse group of Multivox vocalists. Each track brings a different energy and unique flavour. I realise it's not your average run of the mill music project but I think that makes it more interesting for the listener.

Love Music: Looking ahead, what can fans anticipate from Multivox in terms of future releases or creative projects?

We are looking at releasing singles in 2024 and the debut album Musikprojekt will land in 2025. All updates will be on our website www.multivox.net and on our social media.

Introducing Music By Alex Genadinik

There are many good musicians out there and each has something magical to offer. In this post I want to introduce you to Alex Genadinik and his unique songwriting.

He writes songs with unique ideas and imagery. Here is an analysis of his songs with metaphors. One example of his songs is “Oh Michelangelo” in which Alex uses Michelangelo’s famous painting “The Birth Of Adam” and repaints it to have two lovers caress each other in the song. 

Alex’s other romantic songs similarly feature sweet lyrics and use similarly grandiose metaphors. His other songs have lovers meeting in their dreams on their stars as they fall asleep, in the clouds, on Romeo and Juliet’s balcony, and many other romantic settings.

But Alex doesn’t just write romantic sons. His lyrics focus on capturing a slice of life without being afraid of difficult situations or emotions. Yet in these difficult emotions, we find a lot of humanity. Our shared experiences as people is what makes songs about these kinds of topics such relatable songs - we can all identify because we have all been in these situations and we recognize ourselves in the story of the song.

He has a number of songs about loneliness, compassion, songs about support, hope, disappointment, and much more.

Alex got his inspiration from Bulat Okudzhava, a Russian singer-songwriter. Bulat Okudzhava was one of the best and most popular singer-songwriters in 20th Century Russia, but he is little known in the west because he wrote in a different language. Interview with Maxi Curnow

Love Music: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your background, education, music passion etc. ??

I started guitar when I was 9, I would’ve loved bandmates but I grew up in a small rural village - so it became really important to learn how to record myself and play different instruments to make music independently! Through school I was recording other people and hosting gig nights, I was obsessed. When I was about 17 and started visiting London, I was lucky to learn as an assistant for Tim Laws and also at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club, eventually going on to work with both in a professional capacity. This was alongside a Music Production Degree at ACM, although I always preferred the hands on experience! After I left ACM I worked with a lot of bands alongside training/joining as a Firefighter - I’d compose music in a studio nearby and then rush to the fire station whenever my pager went off! After 4 years I got an injury, and decided to commit to music and filmmaking full time. 

Love Music: can you please share with us your music production work?

There’s been a great mixture of genres, products and clients over the years. I do the music production on all of my own work which I love for the flexibility and range of sound one can achieve. That extended to mixing for bands and production music for TV/Film, and product development for Spitfire Audio; working intimately with the audio on Hans Zimmer, Abbey Road and Ólafur Arnalds projects. I also work at a Mastering Engineer, so a lot of music comes through my door!

Love Music: Your favourite project as a Mastering Engineer?

“Fire By The Silos” by Toska - Rabea Massaad is an incredible writer and that album was such a joy to work with.

Love Music: What's the reason behind choosing this profession ?

It started as a means to fund my own music, but I quickly discovered the joy and creativity of learning all the crazy and incredible things you can do with Pro Tools. I find production to be fascinating, I love playing with different sonic flavours to completely transform a song into whatever you want/need it to be. It feels like magic sometimes.

Love Music : What has been one of the most exciting achievements of your career so far ?

Learning when my music had been featured on certain TV shows was amazing, especially ones that I personally enjoy. I’m happy to say that there are a fair few, Louis Theroux particularly stood out! Working on Hans Zimmer projects with Spitfire was also very special. 

Love Music: What’s your goal in life you want to achieve next?

I want to make a musical, bit in a slightly different way than people might expect! I’m also excited to share some collaborations on my next album.

Love Music: Did you choose this industry, as a career, or as a hobby?

I suppose both - Since I can remember it’s all I’ve done, I can’t imagine doing anything else! I’ve always been intrigued by a mixture of things within production, so it’s never felt dull.

Interview with Psychodelic Caravan

Psychodelic Caravan is a Kansas City, Missouri based classic rock cover band comprised of music scene veterans performing everyone’s fave blues & classic rock radio hits. The guys are currently busy writing a few original songs and preparing for an early 2024 international release. 

Hello Brion, thank you for being with us today! Let's start from the very beginning. How long has Psychodelic Caravan been performing shows together?

Brion Holcomb: It'll be 7 years this November when we first started getting together and rehearsing songs and seriously putting the band together to go out and start hitting clubs. With the long-term goal of doing original music as well. But we spent a couple months in the basement and our first gigs weren't until the following Spring.

How many members are in the band and what are their names?

Brion Holcomb: We're a three piece rock band from the Kansas City, Mo. area. All veteran players who each have had their own musical paths that have made us the player's we are today. On drums, vocals, dazzling socks & The Bus Driver is "Smokin' Doug Thompson. Bass guitar, vocals & most of our limited choreography are handled entirely by Mr. Allen Brooks. I fill in the rest of the sonic space with some stand out footwear, vocals and a guitar that goes from Sweet to Blazing (depending on the song)!

Where does the band mostly play?

Brion Holcomb: Over the years we've played a lot of the clubs on the east side of the Kansas City, Missouri area. Quite a few of which are not in business anymore, but we still are. I think that's a good sign. We also play in Iowa quite a bit in the summer. We seem to do real well with the bikers up there and the regular folks too at the bars and motorcycle rallies. So that's been a lot of fun for us. We've also played in Kansas a little bit and we're always looking for new places to play for sure! We're at the point now where we'd like to expand further into Columbia, St. Louis, Omaha. Expand our range a bit.

After seven years together, and doing around 50 shows a year, you guys are a well-established music reality in Missouri and Iowa. How do you guys keep the spark alive after many years of playing together?

Brion Holcomb: That's a great question. I think the main thing is we just try to have fun with it all the time. We're at the point in our lives where if it is too much work then it's not fun anymore. So we've choose to keep it light. 

We don't take ourselves too seriously. Nobody bags on anybody else. If they have a problem with something we all try to pitch in and make it happen. I think we've got a pretty good friendship going amongst us where we can all talk about whatever's going and hopefully work out whatever it is.Then we go on and we have a good time with it and try to put on a great show. I don't think in a three-piece. You can phone it in at any time. You have to put on a good show every time or else it could be ugly.

Many bands work on their material from the very first day, and this can result in a sound that is not united, solid, or fluid. Psychodelic Caravan has strong pillars now, and a style that is mature and unique. Do you think this is one of the elements that will make your new original songs better than if you had recorded initially when first formed?

Brion Holcomb: Well, I've played in a lot of bands over the years. Both cover bands, originals only and combinations of the two. It seems to me that it does take a while for a band to develop their identity and see what rolls everybody's going to play on stage and off. Everybody's got got a part to play both on stage and behind the scene, my personal favorite loading equipment, but I digress. The advantage to us being together so long now is we've all got the same attitude. We've even got a look and we've got a sound. If you've ever seen us play live, you know that we take a lot of liberties with the cover songs anyway and make them our own.We have a huge pallet of grooves and sounds to choose from with our originals and I think people are really going to get a kick in the ass out of them.

If you could collaborate with an artist that has inspired you, who would it be?

Brion Holcomb: Oh, wow! Haha! I guess I've got two replies to that one. If it was anyone alive or dead I'd have to say Jimi Hendrix I mean how great would that be? He's the guy that kind of inspired me to start playing the guitar as a kid and I like his whole zen approach to life. We've all got to love each other, you know. Hmmm, now living artist, I'm going to say my dream collaborator would be Brian May. He's still kicking ass and he's another guy that inspired me to play the guitar and sing. I'd say he's definitely got a little blame in it.

Are you looking to get on any Midwest or national tours next year?

Brion Holcomb: Yeah, we're really looking to take it to the next level next year.. The band will have some original songs to promote! Not just t-shirts. 

Although, have you seen our t-shirts? They're pretty kick ass. Tie-dyed shirts that you can read I'm A Psycho on them from across a field! We're hoping we can keep turning heads like we've been doing at some of these big abate rallies and such. We're always willing to talk to anybody that wants us to play a club, a party or a show and we're always open to assistance with promotions and bookings.

Blues, rock, and much more, Psychodelic Caravan has its own sound and style. Is this due to the artistic vision that you guys share with your audience? 

Brion Holcomb: I think we view it as more of a symbiotic relationship between the artist and the audience. A lot of it is trial and error. We're constantly trying to acquire more material that goes over well with the majority of the people that dig us. 

You guys wear a lot of very colorful clothing on stage. How did the tie dye stage look come about?

Brion Holcomb: I remember seeing an interview with Elvis and he said that Liberace told him to dress as wild as he could because you want people to know you're the talent. You're not just another dude in the bar. And going with the tie dyes is just the latest incarnation of that attitude. But you never know what kind of crazy stuff we're going to wear next.

Brion, it was such a pleasure having you with us today! Is there anything you would like to say to our readers and your fans?
