Out Of The Dark by Trey Wonder

Trey Wonder is an artist driving with genuine emotion and a passionate connection to the music he makes. Having been through some unthinkable difficulties, the musician and songwriter has channeled his frustration and fear into art – into music. From the album The Ghost of my Father, Out Of The Dark makes for a bold and memorable introduction to his work and his approach to creativity.

Out Of The Dark is a song that quite literally takes on the topic of being held back by personal turmoil or struggle. The sound feels authentically punk-rock-like in nature, though with a few flickers of electronic-rock to mix things up. Trey’s voice offers a fitting balance between gentle indie-pop and something a little grittier. As stated, there’s a world of emotion embedded within his music, and this pours through in everything from the instrumental choices to the lyrics to his vocal performance and tone. The punk rock aura stands tall in the melody and the minimal level of notes utilised during the verses, but elsewhere the artist lets the moment and the underlying sentiments dictate the direction of the song.

Turning in at just under the three minute mark, Out Of The Dark hits in the way that punk-pop used to back in the day. The guitar riff has character, it’s simple but effective – you recognise it the second time around, and it works in the way that organic and rhythmic rock should. Trey has performed every element of the recording himself, so the connection is strong throughout the building blocks that make up the track. The drums, the guitars, the bass, the lyrics, the overall expression – everything is unique and true to the intended ideas.

Trey touches on his darkness in a real and uninhibited way – moments like there’s no continuing, you’re dead… sun shines when I’m stuck inside… I might as well kill myself – these stand out as rightfully shocking. The truthfulness runs deep, and it connects for its honesty. Losing a loved one, particularly to suicide, is heart breaking, confusing, and often breath-takingly difficult to handle. Trey addresses this without simply clouding over it. However, he also addresses the next stages of life – the moving forwards, the overcoming. The song’s title and underlying concept is about finding the strength and continuing – …stop thinking of death, I gotta pull myself out of the dark.

For its raw indie-rock presentation the song works well and favors its audience, likely making for a big moment at a live show. For its writing and realness, the song offers vulnerability and humanity, which ticks a whole host of other boxes and adds immense value to the work and the way it will be received by listeners.

The Ghost of my Father as an album takes on all of these qualities and more. Trey continues to explore the issues that have haunted him, the various forks in the road and the effects they’ve had on his life, and musically he continues to offer energy and colour and escapism. Well worth a listen.

Interview with Slim Reaper aka Freestyle Junkie

Love Music : Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from and where are you now?

I go by the name “Slim Reaper”. I’m a lyrical rapper and storyteller. I was born in Denver, raised in Israel and I’m currently based in New York. I’m formally trained writer and before I started rapping, I worked on two novels that I’m still trying to get published.

Love Music : What made you realize that music was your path?

Like I said, I started with more traditional writing but slowly began gravitating towards hip-hop. I’ve always loved the art form and I’d written various raps and poems while growing up. At a certain point music became more tangible than prose. Above all, I want to get my message out and music is just the most accessible avenue.

Love Music : Please tell our readers about your debut EP "RiP to the PEACEFUL (me)" ?

“RiP to the PEACEFUL (me)” is a concept EP. I actually interpret the idea of being “peaceful” as negative. Peacefulness is complacency and accepting bad habits. The EP follows the transition from passive to active, while telling relatable stories. It bumps, but keeps you thinking.

Love Music : What makes your verses unique?

My verses are rhyme heavy and lyrical, but also down to earth. When you first listen, you catch the general idea, but each new play will uncover another layer. As a rapper I’m always trying to strike a balance between deeper meaning and relatability.

Love Music : Who are your musical inspirations?

I love old school hip-hop. Nas, Biggie, Slick Rick, Gang Starr and Black Star are some of my favorites. My current favorites are Earl Sweatshirt, Joey Bada$$, J. Cole, Danny Brown and Kendrick. MF Doom and Eminem are huge influences as well, I guess they’re an in between kind of era. Two rappers that I actually really admire are Kevin Gates and YBN Cordae. That one is always a surprise to people.

Love Music : What are your future plans ? Your vision for the coming years.

I’ve already started work on my next project, “Look for Me”. It has a little bit of a different sound, in terms of being more dissonant with dream-like production. It also is going to feature a few other rappers and singers, as opposed to “RiP to the PEACEFUL (me)”, which is just me. Other than that, just performing as much as possible and forming alliances with other rappers.

Love Music : If you could perform anywhere, in the world, where would it have to be?

Red Rocks in Colorado. For anyone who has ever seen a show at this venue, it’s an easy choice. A beautiful outdoor amphitheater, incredible natural acoustics, my home state. Sign me up.

Love Music : Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time?

I know this is a lame answer, but music is my free time. Between the stress of life, and day jobs that I have to work for now, music is my outlet. The great thing about hip-hop is that there is always something to practice: freestyling, lyrics, flow or performance. I kind of alternate between those aspects based on what I’m in the mood for.

Love Music : Where can fans follow you?

I’m not the most active across all platforms, but for now instagram (@reaper_madness) is the best. I update my page fairly often and I’m responsive on there. You can find my music on any streaming platform that you might use. Youtube and SoundCloud included.

Love Music : Anything else you want us to know?

Just this. Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully you’ll listen and enjoy my stuff. If you do, feel free to follow and get updates for my next project!

Interview with BG The Boy Genius

Albert Einstein wrote, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Everybody is a Genius. Everybody has at least ONE thing they were blessed with. One thing they can tap into and simply be, a Genius.

Whether you’re an athlete, a musician, from exotic dancers to stay at home mothers, you, yes you, reading this right now, you’re a genius. Find it. Own it. And be yourself.

That’s who BG The Boy Genius is. From your greatest of highs, to your lowest of lows, BG provides the soundtrack to a lot of our every day lives.

After all, music is a reflection of life, and BG the Boy Genius, holds the mirror for us all.

Love Music : Please tell our readers about your upcoming project?

My debut album, indiVisual, is close to finally being completed, I’d say about 75% of the way done. I’m about 2 years into the creating of it and I’m so proud of what I have crafted for you to listen to. I even stepped out of my comfort zone and produced a lot of the beats on the album myself.

Love Music : Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to be a professional Rapper/Singer?

Professionalism is key, maintain your relationships, and stand for something, be yourself, love yourself. Do things for you not for other people.

Love Music : What are your future plans as a CEO of Genius Minds LLC ? Your vision for the coming years.

I’m really hoping to branch out beyond music into other avenues of entertainment, we’re currently looking for any comedians/ actors/ actresses to work with!

Love Music : If you could perform anywhere, in the world, where would it have to be?

Europe!

Love Music : Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time?

I play entirely too much Fallout with my manager, video games in general really. But other than that I spend all of my free time with my children and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
