I mean it is hard sometimes to be able to make music. Sometimes I get that writer's block and just can't think of anything to write but I get my motivation back.

Interview with Niki Rubin

Love Music: You are a singer, songwriter, producer, performer, and entertainer. How do these different roles influence your creative process? 

My creative process naturally pulls from each of these roles separately and together as so much of my life has been dedicated to them. My inspiration is always being channeled in these directions. I am a naturally, extremely creative person and I have always been. I have also been connected to these roles through my passions basically my entire life so my creativity usually is geared into these passions. I always hear music in me, I always think about my performances from an outside perspective as well as from the entertainer perspective. Singing is as second nature to me as speaking. These are just some examples of their constant influence. Everything I see, hear, experience, think, feel inspires everything I do within these roles.  

  

Love Music: Your new video for “Dreaming of You” from the Precious Soul EP has just been released. What inspired this song, and how does the visual bring its message to life? 

The inspiration for my beautiful song “Dreaming Of You” is a combination of things. Cultivating, manifesting, and affirming the most beautiful, divine life and self. A portal of the loveliest vibrations, energies, atmospheres, experiences, and dreams. A world created by the song that is a lovely energy and atmosphere. The visual of this video aids in providing this atmosphere that is positively inspiring. Otherworldly dream realm, blended with the physical reality. I wanted it to feel dreamy. I wanted it to have bright colors amidst the background. In the video, my soul, spirit, energy, voice, music, dancing, vibe and intention provides color to the physical world which can be difficult to see the beauty of and I help provide the sight and sense to see it. At the same time, the visual brings to life the positive affirmations of aligning and existing in the individual viewer’s beautiful dream for whatever it is they wish for themselves.  

Love Music: Precious Soul carries a very emotive title. What themes or emotions were most important for you to express throughout this EP? 

To create the understanding, love, expression, frequency, experiences and respect of being a precious soul. Upliftment in the most beautiful ways that resonate with the most divine essence of the soul and outward, in addition to powerful keys that bring out aspects of our souls that are mystical, magical, whimsical, and ethereal.  

Love Music: As an independent artist working with Independent Forever Records and Alms. International Music Agency, how has independence shaped your sound and career decisions? 

I am able to really be me; to put the real me into everything I do; to have balance as an Artist, Creator, Being, and Mother. I have no limitations as far as the direction I take my music and productions. In fact I am celebrated for my choices along the way. I am able to deeply connect with my true self and essence and express these aspects of myself and am encouraged and celebrate doing so. I am treated as a multi-faceted being whose uniqueness through all I do is honored, wanted, and supported; not as a machine or a product, but a living, breathing being, a Goddess who has so much to offer that is of value and worth. They are also honest, educational, and fair so I also really enjoy working with them for this reason as well.  

Love Music: You’re currently working on a new album in the studio. How is this upcoming project differ creatively from Precious Soul? 

I don’t think it differs as much as is the next step in the journey of Niki Rubin’s Music which is always to uplift and positively manifest in some way on some level. I treat all of life as experiences that led me to my presence and that each presence helps shape my future. Like all of my life, I go deeper, I peel back the layers, I cultivate beautiful energy that actually creates the most beautiful worlds. Each song is its own world that pulls us into it and fills us up so we exist in it. I use myself and my music, and really all I do, as a channel for the divine and what I feel is missing and needed in my world first, thus the whole world. This new album will be the next step in all of this from Precious Soul and I am excited to experience how it all comes together as I go. I definitely have my own styles and I love expanding myself through them. I already have a working title, which is a powerful affirmation and I have already been working on the next songs for it. One of the songs on the new album, for example, helps us start our day in an amazing energy alignment. For all of my music, my base is R&B, Soul and Dance and my connection with nature, mysticism, and the divine come through the songs with intentions of helping whoever listens to feel good.  

Love Music: Being a 3x award-winning actress and composer, how does your acting background influence your songwriting and performance style?  

My background with these things helps provide me with empathy, emoting, relating, remote viewing of myself from all angles, storytelling through the music and performances and creating the world, energy, and atmosphere I am cultivating for all who experience, hear, witness, and enjoy my songwriting and performances.  

Love Music: Your music is available for placement, licensing, and syncing. How important is music licensing in today’s industry, and how do you approach creating music that works across multiple platforms? 

Licensing, placement, and syncing is a wonderful way to get the music, my artistry, and myself out there and bring money in for the music I put so much into creating. When I create music, I feel that there are billions of people in the world and many different platforms and opportunities bringing the possibility of people connecting with my music. I believe in staying true to myself and my purposes and believe that people do and will connect with it because of this. I love my music and it is the main music I listen to and because of that, I know others do and will as well. My music sounds great and feels great so I love all of the possibilities and opportunities to get my music heard and experienced through multiple sources and platforms.  

Love Music: As a producer, what elements do you focus on most when shaping the final sound of a track?  

The elements I focus on most when shaping the final sound of a track depend on what the world of the song I feel needs to sound like and feel like through every moment of the way, as well as where it brings me and what it leaves me with while listening and after listening. My music must make me feel good and be pleasant to hear and experience the entire way through. All of my songs have a hypnotic, magical element to them and different sounds, blends of sounds and rhythms, and layers of these mixed my beautiful harmonies are important to the final sound. Sometimes my voice is a more prominent lead vocal and sometimes I blend it more with the song if that is what I feel the song calls for. The elements of feeling my songs and tantalizing our different senses, both physical and spiritual, as well as psychic play a huge focus on the final sound, as well.  

Love Music: With your music reaching audiences across streaming platforms and social media, how do you stay connected with fans in a constantly evolving digital landscape?  

I approach what I share the same way as how I approach my music. 

 I think social media is wonderful for helping people know about and connect with my music so all of my offerings for my fans carry the same vibrations, energy, intentions, purposes and cultivations through everything I do and put out there. My music matches my being and my being matches my music. I connect through the intention of helping people feel amazing and have great in they lives through my music as I use social media to help them be aware that I have this for them out there. For example, if someone on social media expresses feeling down, I let them know about my amazing music I make that can help them feel better as this is what I make my music for. I, Alms. Intl. Music Agency, and Independent Forever Records make sure my music is available on as many platforms as possible and through as many sources as possible throughout the world and up to date with where things evolve so we keep evolving and expanding as we progress, while staying true to myself and purposes.  

Love Music: Looking ahead, what can listeners expect next from Niki Rubin—both musically and creatively—in the coming months?  

The most lovely, unique, special, beautiful, powerful, uplifting vibrations, songs, atmosphere, and worlds through sound and visuals that make us feel positively amazing and divine and align us with positively amazing and divine. Love Music: You’ve been creating music since the early ’90s—what first sparked your passion, and what has kept that fire alive for over three decades?

I’ve always loved music since I was a little boy obsessively playing records on my record player and listening to the radio . I used to tape my favourite songs on the radio too and make mixtapes .

Love Music: Your career spans film, television, global brands, and major artist collaborations. Which achievement stands out as a defining moment for you, and why?

I’m not sure if any one particular stands out cause there are too many tô mention and it’s always the same feeling of getting a mental high when it happens wether it’s working with Kaskade or Jody Watley for the first time or hearing our music featured in movies such as Get Him to the Greek or American Pie  or in commercials by Stella McCartney .

Love Music: As a Grammy-winning producer and songwriter, how has your approach to music evolved from your early days to now?

It’s always the same process with us improving along the way . When I went to work in my first proper recording studio such as Abbey Road with our producer at the time , Robin Millar I was surprised to see the same process with us working as if we were at my home studio . It’s all about the tape And what goes on it.

Love Music: You’ve worked with a wide range of artists—from Kaskade to Jody Watley and Finley Quaye. What do you value most when collaborating with other creatives?

I value their talent and voices the most I think . 

And I value their stories too like Jody Watley telling me janet Jackson s first concert experience was her brother michael taking her to see Shalamar at Disneyland when she was a little girl and Jody showing me pictures . 

Love Music: In an era driven by fast trends and virality, you’ve built your career on longevity and consistency. What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to navigate today’s music industry?

Be persistent and work on your craft.

Love Music: Looking ahead, what goals or new directions are you most excited to explore as a writer, producer, and musician?

You never know what's around the corner and id like to do more projects and continue on my path . 

Love Music: Dirtee Lektrix blends blues, rock, and soul with a modern edge—what inspired the sound and direction of this project?

I wanted to do something for my brother Raphael who’s more into rock than anything else since a young age . We’d been doing a lot of dance music and disco and stuff which he didn’t like as much so I wanted to please him and say thank you by creating a more rock and blues project.

Love Music: Can you take us inside the creative process behind the album? How did recording in London with your close circle of collaborators shape the final result?

It all went very fast with the ideas flowing naturally In stops and starts a few songs at a time . I like to write and produce the songs quickly to keep the inspiration flowing and I think the listeners can hear and feel the results .

Love Music: The project has already seen placements across fashion, TV, and film. How important is sync and visual storytelling when creating music for Dirtee Lektrix?

The synchs always come after the music so we don’t really think about that when we are creating. We just focus on the song and how to make it as great as possible .

Love Music: What message or feeling do you want listeners to take away after experiencing the Dirtee Lektrix album?

Hopefully tô inspire them and take them to our little sonic corner of the world on a journey where they forget their troubles for a bit .

I don't find it challenging, balancing work and being creative,  as it's in my nature to write down and record songs when I'm on the bus, whilst walking and even in my breaktime at work.

Travelling around the world, working on cruise ships, has been one of the most  amazing experiences in my life so far, and also meeting people from all walks of life.

Love Music: What’s your goal in life you want to achieve next?

My next goal is that, I want this hobby to be a full-time venture. Where I travel full-time and spread the gospel via music.

In my creative process I was really just messin around with the beat until I found the right vibe. Making the beat seems to come a lot easier than puttin the words together, but thats where the fun is. Meanwhile, the song makes a statement: I'm doin what I do, ready or not.

Q: How do you stay creative and disciplined while balancing personal life and music? 

Honestly, its hard to find that balance. So for me, its like a schedule. I put in this much time at this time of day and I make sure to keep up with that. Even when I don't feel like it.

Levi Coovert is finding paradise, one song at a time.

The 20-year-old country musician from Washington State says he started making music during a time of depression, and that it has helped him find purpose in life.

"I started writing songs during the pandemic in 2020," Coovert said. "It was a time in my life when I was depressed, and truthfully, had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I was lost. Music saved me."

Coovert's first single, "50 Days," in 2020, was inspired by his experience in the first 50 days of the pandemic. From there, he just kept writing songs.

"My first few songs, they were inspired by the pandemic. And I didn't know it at the time, but, they resonated with people," 4Coovert said. "I didn't realize how powerful songs could be until that moment."

Coovert's latest record, 'Find Your Paradise,' detailed his journey to finding paradise, which he believes comes from love, joy, and music.

"I've always said, there are three you need in life. Love, joy, and music," Coovert said. "I've found them all, at various times in my life. And this record is a culmination of that."

Coovert's joy comes from sharing his songs with the world.

"Last winter, I was bored, and I had a new guitar, and I just decided to start playing it for people," Coovert said. "I started emailing restaurants, bars, you know. Started out at open mics. Met a lot of really great people along the way, and it went from there."

Now, Coovert can routinely be found on the weekends playing at bars, cafes, and restaurants around Pullman, Washington, where he is a senior studying at Washington State University.

"I love playing for people. It's fun, especially when the crowd is hyped and energized," Coovert said. "I always try to read the mood of the people, and play songs that I hope will match the energy in the room." Coovert says he was a natural fit to perform because of his background in musical theatre in high school.

"In high school, I did a lot of stage acting," Coovert said. "That helped prepare me for this moment in my life really well. I don't get nervous to perform anymore. I don't know. I just get on stage and do it."

Coovert's latest single, 'Let the Good Times Flow,' released on October 24th, is one of his favorites yet. “I wrote this song on a day when I was feeling very low,” Coovert said. “This song was my pick-me-up.”

The song is a country-rock anthem inspired by college life in Pullman, according to Pullman.

“Being in college, there’s a culture of kicking back, and having a good time. We’re young, it’s a cool time in our lives when fun is really encouraged,” Coovert said. “So that’s in a big way, the spirit of the song.”

Coovert likened songwriting to therapy. “Writing, and creating music, it’s like therapy to me,” Coovert said. “It’s what I live for, and it truly is paradise for me. Music is my paradise.”

Coovert’s next venture will be a full-length country album, which he says is coming soon. “It will be out at some point next year, and I can’t wait.”
